History: The Ducains, a family of Breal demons, have reigned in New York for years as one of the most dominant demonic crime families to exist since the birth of the United States, traditionalists in practice of their supernatural customs, but free thinkers in regards to racial purity. Having carefully intermarried with humans for decades, the end result has since created a race of mixedbloods that allow the Ducains to function in polite society with humanoid progeny, while the rest possess the traditional yellow fangs and blue skin with matching hair and eyes possessing no pupil, only endless black or blue.

Being one-quarter Breal demon (halfbreed mother and mixed blood father), Marketh's middle son was christened in the traditional manner, both with human and clan names. Born Tarsus Joseph, the boy went by Joseph more often than not, and spent his childhood in Brooklyn, New York, where he grew up in the world of both demons and organized crime.

Much to his mother's displeasure, all of the Ducain boys were groomed to get into the "family business." Joseph started at an early age, joining a few street gangs in his youth before being taken under his father's wing when he came of age at fifteen. He was initially included in business meetings, occasionally accompanying his brothers on collection assignments due to his more normal appearance, not to mention an impressive size and build for a kid his age standing at five-eight and nearly two hundred pounds of pure muscle. By the time Joseph was seventeen, he was working in one of his father's clubs bussing tables, then tending bar with a fake ID. At eighteen Joseph started collecting for his father on his own, becoming particularly violent and earning a reputation as being something of a loose cannon.

When Joseph turned twenty, his father finally started sending him out on hitjobs. Joseph took to killing well, though he became even moodier and more volatile than usual as he became more and more proficient. At the same time, his mother contracted cancer, which killed her by the time Joseph was twenty two.

After his mother's death, Joseph became a dangerous man. Out of control and impossible to handle, he began getting careless on hits and overly violent with his loan collections. His family finally confronted him, only to be subjected to his wrath. In the end, Joseph did the one thing he knew would be his undoing: he turned his back on his father and brothers, announcing his departure from the family business.

After taking his leave of his family, Joseph made plans to leave Brooklyn and head West to California, changing his last name to Turner and abandoning his demonic title. Enrolling in college, Joe decided to go for a shot at law school. Before he could, his family's punishment came: a tip to the local authorties connected Joseph to his most recent hit, as well as several others in the last two years he was working for his father.

Charged with multiple homicides, Joseph was convicted and sentenced to life without parole, entering prison on his twenty fourth birthday. Joseph became a model prisoner, though he managed to instill a great deal of fear into his fellow inmates at the same time, courtesy of his rep as a Ducain. Five years into his life sentence, Joseph was brought up on additional charges when new evidence tied him to yet another hit he'd been responsible for. Just as he had at his previous trial, Joseph pled guilty...only this time, his sentece was death by lethal injection.

Two years into his time on Death Row, waving his appeals and awaiting his turn for execution, he was approached by members of Wolfram & Hart with an offer to work for the firm in exchange for his arranged release from prison and an overturn on his death penalty conviction. Joseph declined the initial offer, but when he was promised a shot at his family to take revenge for his jail sentence, and a new identity when all was said and done, Joseph grudgingly agreed to the deal.

The arrangement for Joseph's services as hired muscle and an effective assasin, however, was a faulty one, as he proved to be as volatile and mercurial as he had with his family. Finding that the Los Angeles branch could no longer handle him, he was transferred to Boston with a promise that he'd be allowed to continue his education with the full support of the firm. The transfer seemed to improve Joseph's temperament as he settled in to a routine of attending classes at the local university on a grant from the firm, while continuing to work for them in his down time.
